The price of a dozen eggs, at around $5 on average, is up nearly 100 percent from last year.
About 18.8 million commercial egg layers were affected by the bird flu in January, the highest monthly total since the outbreak began in 2022, the USDA said.
Egg prices in January 2025 were 53 percent higher than in January 2024 and surpassed the previous peak prices in January 2023.
With Easter coming, leading to an increase in the demand for eggs, things could get even worse quickly.
